Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS BABY DEDICATION?
Children are a gift from
God. He gives them to bless us, and as parents, we must be willing to
give them back to Him. Baby Dedication is a special time for parents to:
- Thank
God for the precious gift of their child
- Publicly
affirm their faith in Jesus Christ
- Commit
before God and fellow believers to raise their child in the "training
and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). This commitment means
to raise the child in the ways of God contained in God's Word, the Bible.
- Commit
to pray daily for their child and to seek God's wisdom in raising their
child.
- Pledge
that they will always lead their child toward God in a Christian home
where Christ is honored and the Word of God is held in reverence.
- Pledge
that in life, in love, and in prayer, they will lead their child toward
that age in his life when he will, of his own free will, confess Jesus
Christ as Lord and Savior.
WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD BE?
Baby dedication is for
babies who are newborn to 18 months.
WHAT
IF MY CHILD IS OLDER THAN 18 MONTHS?
For children above 18
months old, special arrangements can be made for the parents to meet with the
Elders of Amarillo South Church during their weekly
meeting on Monday night. At this time, the child will be dedicated by our
Elders.
IS
BABY DEDICATION LIKE INFANT BAPTISM?
No, the Baby Dedication
is a ceremony for parents to promise to the Lord to do everything within their
power to raise their child in a godly way until
the child is old enough to make his/her own decision to follow God.
Baptism is another ceremony where a person makes
a personal decision to accept Christ as his/her Lord and Savior. The
person being baptized must be old enough to confess Him publicly and understand
God's plan for salvation.
DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF
AMARILLO
SOUTH TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BABY
DEDICATION?
You do not have to be a
member of Amarillo South for your baby to be part of the Baby Dedication.
Baby Dedication is open to parents who can say with all of their heart, "I
will commit myself to raising this child to know Jesus Christ by loving,
disciplining, training, and setting a positive Christ-like example."
IS THERE AN EXAMPLE OF BABY DEDICATION IN SCRIPTURE?
Hannah
is a positive example of a mother dedicating her son to the Lord:
"And she
(Hannah) made a vow saying, "O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon
your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her
a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his
life." (1 Samuel 1:11)
When
God answered Hannah's prayer by giving her a son, she remembered her vow:
"As surely as
you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the
Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked
of Him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life, he will
be given over the Lord.' And he worshiped the Lord
there." (1 Samuel 1:26-28)
WHEN IS BABY DEDICATION?
Baby Dedication is held
each year on Mother's Day Weekend.
